Day 1

Bottom half of the drawboard is completed for 1st round action. Like always, someone has to go home on Day 1 and more often than not it will be some of the (higher) seeds.

Yes it’s all about Andy Murray! How did he lose, you say? Simply because he met a player who was better in 3 of 4 sets. Murray had plenty of opportunities, especially when cramp took over in Tsonga’s play. He was able to run down a lot of the balls anyway and Murray still needs to work with his mood. At one point, he reacted with shouts and spasm-like gesturing almost after every missed shot or Tsonga-winner. Mood swings like that only go with pregnancy. On court you should be somewhat controlled. Better man won and it will be fun to watch Tsonga on his way to a potential 4th round match against Gasquet. I’m sure he wants to revenge the Wimbledon loss in July.

As for Gasquet, I don’t know how it’s possible to lead 6-0, 6-1 and lose the next 3-6. Gasquet has had plenty of time to stabilize his game and stay within the top, results like this will not translate to a GS title.

Donald Young lost against Berrer, but from what I saw is clearly a player for the future. I believe he is the youngest in the field, and at times, shows impressive skills. And the only reason, ALMOST, for losing today was his lack of maturity and experience. He could go from world class to amateur in 10 seconds. But he is born in 89! Give him some time and he’ll be there.

Many predicted as Chennai repeat of Moya-Nadal in the 4th round. That’s not gonna happen after Koubek did exactly what he should do against old, forehand depended Moya. Move him all around and hit intelligent winners off Moya’s own offensive shots.

Nadal also had a tough time on the court. A new Serb is in town and he definitely got some valueble TV-time when forcing Nadal to tie-break in the first set. If I remember corretly he even had two set points in the second, but wasn’t able to trick Nadal on the important points. Nadal, however, did get a fair share of running time.

Roddick also pulled through with an OK win over an 150+ ranked Czech. Next he will meet Berrer who took out Young.

Tomorrow, Djokovic, Federer and Nalbandian will start their AO travel.  I expect more upsets and surprises tomorrow….
